Mission 46- Visit Pilgrims Rest, Mac Mac Falls and Explore the Sudwala Caves

" I am going to have to become familiar with a little history of the area and I might even need to watch the original movie of “Jock and the Bushveld’ to get a sense of the surroundings and what it was like back in the 1800’s."

Snacks are a very important and crucial commodity in some of our everyday lives. Be it snacking in a car, behind your office desk or munching on those biscuits in front of the Technological LED Unit, snacks provide a comfort and an experience for those taste buds.

I’m what one would refer to as a regular evening snacker! Regular evening snackers are inclined to have a craving for nibbles normally late after 9pm and tends to designate a particular compartment or cupboard that comprises of stock for the night’s munching goodie moments.

It was an ordinary evening sitting on my couch in the lounge when all of a sudden I could feel my tummy tingling and sounds of ‘rumble rumble’ started echoing through the room. I tried reasoning with myself, “No Pam, that snack will go straight to your buttocks... but it’s just one snack, it would most likely evaporate by the time it reaches anywhere”! “I need to fetch a naartijie instead... naartjies are like water... I should get my filter cylinders replaced... these socks are useless, my feet are still cold”. Before I know it, I’ve subliminally chosen to ignore the naartjie suggestion and I’m off on a snack finding mission. I walked into my kitchen towards my snack stash cabinet and as I opened the door the scene of a slow motion mouth movement started playing out, “Nooooooo”. There was nothing! The rhyme of ‘Old Mother Hubbard’ and her bare cupboard started filtering my womanly mind and I just breathed slowly and decided that I would need to stay calm, present myself with poise and carefully place myself into a vehicle to drive to the nearest shop. Now being an evening snacker poses a huge problem as no shops are open that late unless you are stopping at your local garage or filling station but even then the choices are limited.

This has got me thinking (~light bulb blows~)... there should be a 24 Hour Drive through Snack Shop! Imagine a world where the regular evening snacker can frolic through a snack drive through and fill up their empty snack cupboards... imagine a world where men with pregnant wives can have a place to cure their wives yearnings! Old Mother Hubbard would be able to give her poor dog a bone!

I think the world would be a better place with a 24 Hour Drive through Snack Shop and my website would be a better place if it had a new mission announcement. ~Hehe~

Mission 46- Visit Pilgrims Rest, Mac Mac Falls and Explore the Sudwala Caves

Situated on the ‘Panorama Route’ on the Eastern Escarpment region of Mpumalanga is a historic village that is well known for its history with the gold rush in South Africa and is a small mining town that has become a live museum village displaying some the original buildings and historic mining artefacts. There is something special about Pilgrims Rest as it forms part of the Percy Fitzpatrick’s book ‘Jock of the Bushveld’ where he used to deliver supplies.

Travelling a little further I’ll be visiting the famous Mac Mac Falls with its picturesque waterfall that boasts an impressive 70m drop into a gorge! The Mac Mac Falls is a national monument and forms part of the history of the 1870’s gold rush.

My final destination will be exploring the Sudwala Caves which is said to be the oldest known caves in the world. I shall travel 600m into the cave and will become one with the Horseshoe bat territory. I shall be... Little Miss Mission Impossible- Bat Girl!

I am going to have to become familiar with a little history of the area and I might even need to watch the original movie of “Jock and the Bushveld’ to get a sense of the surroundings and what it was like back in the 1800’s.

Until Next Time
